The latest and most comprehensive calculations to date show that the global prevalence of diabetes is now 6.1%, making it one of the top ten causes of death and disability. North Africa and the Middle East has the highest incidence rate of 9.3%, which is expected to jump to 16.8% by 2050; while the incidence rate in Latin America and the Caribbean is expected to increase to 11.3%. Diabetes is highly prevalent among people aged 65 and over, accounting for more than 20% of this population worldwide, with the highest incidence among people aged 75 to 79.
In addition, studies have shown that 96% of cases worldwide are type 2 diabetes, and the 16 risk factors involved in the study are all related to type 2 diabetes. High body mass index (BMI) is the main risk of type 2 diabetes, accounting for 52.2% of the disability and mortality rate of type 2 diabetes, followed by diet, environment/occupation, smoking, low physical activity and alcohol consumption.
