Medical microbiologist Jacques Meis from Berg en Dal, the authority in the field of the deadly yeast (single-celled fungus) Candida auris, is not confident. “There are already many countries where there are major problems in hospitals. There is a huge peak in Italy, and in India almost all hospitals are already infected with this yeast. “This is really scary, we have never seen this in a hundred years.”
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC shares the concern and has seen a dramatic increase in the number of patients since 2015 with this new fungus, which can attack the nervous system and organs and cause blood poisoning. The number of infected patients went from 1,500 in 2021 to 2,400 in 2022. Five cases have been found in the Netherlands in recent years. Nearly half of patients who get it die within 90 days, according to CDC researchers.
