Rising Fuel Prices in the Czech Republic Compared to EU Average

Over the past two weeks, fuel prices in the Czech Republic have risen more than the average in the European Union (EU). While a liter of gasoline cost CZK 38.30 in the Czech Republic at the end of July, and two weeks later it was CZK 1.1 more, the price of diesel fuel rose by an average of CZK 0.60 per liter during the same period in the EU. During the same period, diesel in the Czech Republic rose in price by four crowns to CZK 37.50 per liter, while in the EU it rose on average by CZK 1.80 per liter.

This follows from data from the European Commission, which publishes fuel prices every week. In the case of the Czech Republic, an increase in excise duty on diesel by CZK 1.5 per liter contributed to the increase in diesel prices. Poland is the only EU country where gasoline and diesel have become cheaper in the last two weeks.

Despite the increase in price, Czech gasoline is the tenth cheapest in the European Union. Gasoline rose significantly more in Slovenia than in the Czech Republic in two weeks, for example, by CZK 1.4 per liter, and in Croatia by CZK 1.2. Gasoline prices in Austria and Bulgaria rose by the same amount as in the Czech Republic, but despite the increase, they still maintain one of the lowest prices of gasoline in the EU, at 33.1 CZK per liter. Gasoline prices, on the other hand, stagnated in Germany, in Poland they even fell by 20 pennies to 35.6 CZK. However, the cheapest gasoline is filled by drivers in Malta, where a liter costs 32.3 CZK. The most expensive gasoline from the EU is in the Netherlands, a liter for CZK 50.1.

Diesel fuel in the Czech Republic has also become more expensive in the last two weeks than in other EU countries, but despite this, it is still the sixth cheapest diesel fuel in the Union. For example, in Austria, the price of diesel fuel rose by two crowns, in Slovakia by CZK 1.60, and diesel fuel also became more expensive in Croatia by the same amount. The only country in the European Union where diesel has become cheaper is Poland. Besides gasoline, they also have the cheapest diesel in Malta, at 29.1 crowns per liter. The most expensive diesel fuel is in Sweden, at 49.5 crowns per liter.

Excise duty on diesel has increased by 1.5 crowns per liter since the beginning of August. It thus returned to the level valid until last June. In the case of diesel prices, analysts already pointed out at the beginning of August that the increase in consumption tax will not be the only aspect that will influence prices in the coming weeks. Finlord analyst Boris Tomčiak estimated the price increase by more than three crowns, according to him, the increase in the price of oil and wholesale margins should have had an effect on the price in addition to the consumption tax increase.
