Rising Electricity Prices to Impact Italian Families: Expect 7-10% Increase in Next Bills

The price of electricity on international markets is skyrocketing to 138 euros per MWh and Italian families will feel the effect in their next bills. Nomisma Energia estimates an increase of 7-10% from October 1st, coinciding with the latest quarterly update from Arera, the Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and the Environment.

In the week from Monday 21 to Sunday 27 August, Gme recorded an average electricity purchase price (Pun) of 137.67 euros per MWh, up 29.9% compared to the approximately 106 euros of the previous week . The volumes of electricity traded directly on the GME exchange amounted to 4.1 million MWh, with liquidity at 72.4%. The average sales prices, communicates the Electricity Market Manager, varied between 136.25 euros per MWh in the North and 144.16 euros per MWh in Sicily. “If these prices remain, it is certain that there will be an increase on the next electricity bill,” said the president of Nomisma Energia, Davide Tabarelli. “From October 1, there will be a jump of between 7 and 10% in electricity tariffs for the last quarter, the first, somewhat heavy, increase of 2023″. he underlined, explaining that there has been “a rise in gas prices” in recent weeks, with a return above 30 euros per megawatt hour and “electricity prices automatically go up” and “half of Italian electricity production goes with gas”, pointed out the president of Nomisma. Tabarelli added that at the beginning of September the Arera “will determine the August price of gas and there will be only a slight increase of less than 2%”. However, “the indications for next winter give international prices 40% higher than the current ones and if we were to verify this winter’s gas tariffs they would be even 20% higher than the current ones”, warned Tabarelli. Exactly one year ago, gas in Europe reached an all-time record of 340 euros per megawatt hour in the wake of the war in Ukraine. Then the downturn began after Europe itself managed to gradually free itself from Russia’s grip on supplies. Today on the Amsterdam market, a reference for Europe, natural gas futures for delivery in September closed down by 8% at 35 euros per megawatt hour.
