The drivers of electric scooters in Romania have caused over 2,600 accidents in the last 5 years and the first 6 months of this year, most of them being in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iași, Constanța and Galaţi, the consequences being 20 deaths, 373 seriously injured and 2,363 slightly injured, according to data from the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police.

The figures were provided last month by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) following a interpellations of a PSD deputy which requested in June of this year the situation of accidents in which electric scooters were involved in the last 5 years.
The police provided the accident situation during 2018 and the first six months of this year.
The number of accidents involving electric scooters – constantly increasing
Police data show that from 2018 until the first 6 months of this year, there were 2953 road accidents involving electric scooters, resulting in 23 deaths, 399 serious injuries and 2651 minor injuries.
Last year there were 1,339 accidents involving electric scooters, almost double the 707 accidents in 2021.
In the first six months of this year, there have already been 407 such incidents resulting in 2 deaths, 46 serious injuries and 373 minor injuries.
Over 90% of these accidents were caused by the fault of electric scooter drivers
More than 90% of the 2953 accidents in which electric scooters were involved in the mentioned period, respectively 2662 accidents, were caused by non-compliance with road rules by electric scooter drivers, IGPR data also show.
The consequences of these accidents: 20 dead, 373 seriously injured and 2363 slightly injured.
In the first six months of this year alone, there were 365 road accidents caused by non-compliance with traffic rules by those who drive electric scooters, the consequences being 2 deaths, 42 serious injuries and 332 minor injuries, according to the data of the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police .
Top 5 localities with the most accidents: Sector 1 is the leader
The capital is the leader in terms of the number of accidents involving electric scooters, with over 1,600 accidents in the mentioned period, followed by Cluj-Napoca (152 accidents), Iași (99 accidents), Constanța (71 accidents) and Galați (65 accidents).
In Bucharest, most accidents took place in Sector 1 (481 accidents), resulting in 88 seriously injured and 404 slightly injured.
On the other hand, in Cluj-Napoca there were 152 accidents resulting in 2 deaths, 22 serious injuries and 136 minor injuries.
