Rising Deportation Rates in Germany: Statistics and Challenges

From January to June, 7,861 people were deported from the country, which is 27% more than in the same period last year. Of those deported, 1,664 were women and 1,375 were minors. This increase follows a decrease in the number of people deported during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Statistics show that the majority of migrants were sent to their countries of origin – Georgia, North Macedonia, Albania, Moldova and Serbia. Many of the deportees – 2,473 people – were taken to the Austrian border.

The so-called Dublin regulations of the European Union (EU) provide that asylum requests must be submitted and processed in the member state of the bloc where the person originally arrived.

In the first six months of this year, the number of people who left Germany voluntarily also increased. A total of 4,892 people accepted federal funding to return to their country of origin, and 2,309 people received federal or local government funding.

By law, people whose asylum applications have been rejected or whose visas or residence permits have expired must leave Germany. Immigration authorities must carry out their removal in the absence of extenuating circumstances such as illness or other reasons that may qualify for a stay of deportation decisions.

However, deportations often fail. According to the data of the Ministry of the Interior, 520 deportation attempts had to be stopped in the first half of this year. The most common reasons were the resistance of deportees, the refusal of pilots or airlines to transport the deportee, and the refusal of the federal police to detain such a person.

By the end of June, there were still 279,098 people in Germany who were legally required to leave. A report published earlier this year also suggests that thousands of deported illegal immigrants have secretly returned to Germany.

German Interior Minister Nancy Fesser wants to tighten deportation rules and earlier this month presented a draft document that would give police more powers to enforce deportations.
