An official with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees revealed on Thursday the number of migrants who died or went missing in the Mediterranean during the year 2023.
“As of September 24, more than 2,500 people were counted dead or missing in 2023,” said Rufin Menekdiwela, director of the UNHCR office in New York, during a Security Council meeting devoted to the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean.
She added: “This number represents an increase of two-thirds, compared to 1,680 people during the same period in 2022.”
The numbers are increasing…and Italy is “the most welcoming”
• In recent years, the Mediterranean Sea has turned into a cemetery for the dreams of those who tried to cross it to Europe, and despite attempts to stop this phenomenon, illegal boats do not tire of trying to accomplish their mission.
• Italy in particular witnessed a significant increase in the number of migrants, receiving more than 60,000 as of July this year, compared to less than 27,000 last year.
• More than 20,000 deaths have been recorded since 2014, along the dangerous sea route between North Africa and the southern shores of Europe.
• Since 2015, about 300,000 people have been rescued while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea, according to the European Border and Coast Guard Agency.
