Rising Covid-19 Cases and Vaccination Coverage in Paraguay: Latest Updates from Public Health Ministry

The increase in covid-19 cases keeps the Ministry of Public Health (MSPBS) on alert. In the last four weeks, 1,685 new cases of the disease were confirmed, which to date has caused the death of 20,040 people in Paraguay.

The weekly epidemiological report of the General Directorate of Health Surveillance reported that, despite the fact that last week there was a slight decrease in those affected by covid-19, with 338 confirmed cases, the increase in the virus is notable and relevant. During the last 30 days, 1,685 cases of the disease were recorded.

In Paraguay, SARS-CoV-2 has caused 20,040 deaths to date and the hospitalization of 62,536 people and 8,672 patients in intensive care.

According to the Health Surveillance report, last week there were 338 confirmed cases of covid-19, of which 14 were identified in health personnel. The previous week, 496 cases were confirmed.

In relation to the deceased, it was reported that during the last 8 weeks there have been 20 deaths from the disease, mostly people aged 60 and older.

Covid-19 circulates in 17 regions of Paraguay, says Public Health

The data provided indicates that currently 90 districts in 17 regions of Paraguay register cases of covid-19. In most areas, low Level 1 community transmission is recorded.

The anticovid vaccine prevents serious cases and hospitalizations due to the disease, says Public Health.

However, a Level 2 transmission was verified in Asuncion, Villarrica, Yataity, San Juan Bautista, Villa Florida and Paraguarí, Health Surveillance said.

Currently, the only region in Paraguay that has not registered cases of covid-19 for five weeks is Alto Paraguay.

Low vaccination coverage with bivalent dose, says the PAI

Despite the increase in covid cases that is occurring nationwide, the Expanded Immunization Program (PAI) highlights that only 5% of the Paraguayan population received the annual bivalent vaccine.

The group of those under 18 years of age is the most unprotected. The data show that it registers a coverage of 1% and 2%, while the percentage of vaccinated in older people ranges between 10% and 14%.

Currently, the protective vaccine against covid-19 can be applied from 6 months of age. The doses are available throughout the vaccination network of the Ministry of Public Health (MSPBS).
