Those who were going to buy cheap food in neighboring Poland forever have to accept that circumstances have put a big line over their budget. Although it seemed that it would already be cheaper in the neighbors, because Czech retail chains do not show any interest in accommodating customers in any way, now it looks completely different. And quite unpleasant for domestic customers.
It has already started
Shopping in Poland has become more and more disadvantageous in recent days, mainly because the Polish zloty has embarked on a trajectory of relatively significant strengthening, not only against the koruna, but also against the euro. It seems that things are changing in this country now, and investors are simply appreciating this by acquiring more reserves of this currency. On the other hand, there is the Czech crown, which, on the other hand, has weakened sharply in recent weeks.
And while in the past, Czechs dealt with exchange rate differences mainly when they exchanged money for a vacation, today they have to factor it into their purchases, if they go to Poland or Germany for them. The weakening koruna is not at all positive for them, as they simply pay extra for goods abroad. On the contrary, shopping in the Czech Republic appears to be more advantageous.
“I’ve been watching this for a while now. I shop in Poland every 14 days and always pay by card. In recent weeks, purchases have become more expensive in terms of what they cost me in crowns. I’ll have to recalculate everything if it’s still worth it,” says Mrs. Romana from Hradec Králové.

It will get worse
But the truth is that it cannot be taken one-sidedly like this. On the contrary, one of the reasons why shopping in Poland was so advantageous last year and for a large part of this year was precisely the strong koruna. It broke records, while the zloty stagnated or rather weakened. Now we can perceive that everything is returning to a kind of more balanced state, which, however, may not be so advantageous from the point of view of purchases.
And it will get worse. Another reason for significantly cheaper food in Poland was the reduced value added tax. At the same time, it will rise again at the beginning of next year, which will mean an automatic increase in the price of food by around ten percent, because traders will probably add something extra.
