Rising Cost of Living Spurs Increase in Shoplifting in the US

NEW YORK: As the cost of living rises, shoplifting is on the rise in the US. Retailers are now keeping paste, chocolate, laundry powder and perfumes under lock due to fear of theft. The glass shelves and fridges inside the shops will be closed down. Open only to those in need.

Retail giants Walmart and Target, drugstore chains CVS and Walgreens, home improvement retailer Home Depot and shoe store Footlocker have all expressed concern about the increase in thefts. There are cases of theft by the employees themselves.

Brian Connell, chief executive of Target, said that in the first five months of this year, violence and threats of violence in stores increased by 120 percent.

On August 12, 30 masked men broke into Nodstrom’s Los Angeles store and stole more than $300,000 worth of merchandise. The robbery took place after the security guard was pepper sprayed.
