NEW YORK (dpa-AFX) – In view of rising corona numbers, the US state New York wants to take action against an impending relapse into the pandemic with new restrictions. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Wednesday (local time) that restaurants, bars and gyms must close at 10 p.m. In addition, meetings in private homes are limited to a maximum of ten people. The new regulations are due to come into force on Friday, said Cuomo.
“It’s getting really worse every day,” said the governor, referring to new corona highs in the US. If the new measures are not enough and the numbers rise “crazy”, then there could also be a complete closure of the interior, Cuomo said. New York’s Mayor Bill de Blasio also spoke on Wednesday of the “last chance” to prevent a second corona wave.
The state of New York and the metropolis of the same name on the US east coast within it had become the epicenter of the pandemic in the US in spring. The infection rate there had stabilized over the summer, but recently the situation had tightened again.
In the USA, with around 330 million inhabitants, the number of corona infections had exceeded the ten million mark since the pandemic began on Monday. According to statistics from Johns Hopkins University, the number of new infections every day has been well over 100,000 for a week. More than 240,000 people died in the United States after an infection./mub/DP/he
