The liquidation of female cattle destined for slaughter is increasing and worrying. According to the monthly report of the Chamber of Meat Industry and Commerce of the Argentine Republic (Ciccra), the meat processing industry slaughtered 1.2 million head of cattle in the tenth month of the year, a total almost identical to that registered in September . Of these, the number of females totaled 587,400 heads, 20.3% more in interannual comparison -with October of last year-.
Last month, the participation of females in the total slaughter reached 50.6% and marked a new historical record. In addition, he served seven months above the upper limit of the interval that is consistent with the maintenance of the cattle herd. During October 2023, beef production was equivalent to 259,000 tons of bone-in beef, and accumulated four consecutive months of decline.
The greater number of heads sent to slaughter, as a result of the lack of water and food generated by the extraordinary drought in the last year, compensated for the decline in the average hook weight.
The moving average of the last twelve months of apparent beef consumption would have been 53.2 kilos per inhabitant per year (kg/inhabitant/year), exceeding by 6.5% the level reached in October of last year ( +3.3 kg/inhabitant/year).
Regarding the price, the Ciccra authorities indicated in their report that the average price of beef cuts usually measured by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses rose 6.3% between September and October.
