Rising Cases of Pneumonia and Whooping Cough in Children: Nivel Research Institute Reports

THE HAGUE (ANP) – More and more children are suffering from pneumonia and whooping cough. The number of cases has risen sharply in recent weeks, according to the weekly figures from the Nivel research institute.

Last week, about ten in every 100,000 children aged 0 to 14 went to the doctor with whooping cough. That is more than twice as much as the week before. “The number of children who visited the doctor for whooping cough is higher than the three years before,” Nivel said.

Pneumonia is also going around. Last week, 130 in every 100,000 5 to 14-year-olds went to a GP with such complaints. That is more than twice as much as at the highest point last year. General practitioners are also seeing more pneumonia among young people and young adults than in previous years.
