Rising Cases of Kidney Failure in Singapore: Urgent Need for Early Screening

Jakarta

Singapore reports a significant increase in cases of kidney failure. The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) records at least six additional patients every day with a diagnosis of the disease.

It is likely that the number of people with chronic kidney disease is much higher than is being reported. The estimate is even called beyond 300 thousand people.

“There may not be enough dialysis sites for new patients if there is no change,” said the NKF.

Experts urge the importance of proper and prompt early screening to prevent chronic kidney cases from progressing to kidney failure. Quoted from Channel News Asia, every day at 11 am local, the largest kidney center in Singapore is reported to be busy as if it is being hit by a ‘third war’.

The nursing staff and team, move from patient to patient to help them with dialysis. While outside the room, 40 patients were lining up to get their turn.

It wasn’t like this before. Four years ago, when Shanthini, one of the medical staff, had just started working at the site, the room was only half full. Today, nearly every spot in the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) dialysis facility is occupied.

“NKF receives around 100 new applications for dialysis sites each month, almost double the number five years ago,” said NKF Medical Director Jason Choo.

Government records show that currently cases of kidney failure in Singapore are like an iceberg phenomenon. Only 9,000 of them have been diagnosed, while more than 300 thousand people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have the potential to experience this condition.

“Those are just detected cases. For every 10 diagnoses, an estimated five to seven people don’t know their condition,” said Yeo See Cheng, Head of Kidney Medicine at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH).

“This means 200,000 more people can walk around without realizing that their kidneys are having problems. If left unchecked, CKD will develop into kidney failure,” he said.

“The implication is that in the next few years, if nothing changes, the dialysis or dialysis centers will have no place for new patients,” said Yeo.
