Rising Cases of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever in Batu City: Two Deaths Reported

Malang Post – Findings of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) cases in Batu City continue to rise. As of Friday, (8/3) a total of 84 dengue fever cases were found in Batu City. In detail, 60 cases were found in Batu District, eight cases in Bumiaji District and 16 cases in Junrejo District.

Apart from that, there are also a number of cases due to the Dangue virus in Batu City. Namely Dangue Fever (DD) and Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS). Of the total number of cases, there were a total of two deaths purely due to dengue fever.

Coordinator for Prevention, Disease Control and Disaster Management at the Batu City Health Office, Dr Susana Indahwati, stated that two deaths purely due to dengue fever occurred in Punten Village and Temas Village. Then there was one dengue death with comorbidities.

“The cause of death was Diabetes Mellitus in Punten Village. “So what was reported as cases of death due to dengue fever were two cases,” said Susan, (8/3/2024).

He added that the new case of dengue fever in Batu City occurred in Temas Village. From this new case, his party immediately carried out an epidemiological investigation in the RT 7 RW 7 area, Temas Village.

“From the results of the investigation, it is known that the larvae-free rate (ABJ) in the area reached 92.5 percent, compared to a minimum of 95 percent,” he added.

In accordance with the guidelines and control of dengue fever in Indonesia, issued by the Ministry of Health. Fogging can be done if two requirements are met. Namely, more than one person was found to have dengue fever or more than three people were found to be suspected of having dengue fever.

“Apart from that, the condition is that you can carry out fogging if ABJ is found to be less than 95 percent. By considering the epidemiological results, in accordance with the prevention and dengue fever guidelines from the Ministry of Health. “So the steps taken are to continue eradicating mosquito nests (PSN) at least once a week,” he explained.

In this way, you can break the life cycle of mosquitoes. To carry out PSN, it is hoped that all Batu City residents will move together. Coordinated by the local RT RW Chair. Apart from that, the Batu Health Office also provides Abatements and Abatements in water reservoirs that are difficult to drain.

Furthermore, he also explained that in implementing fogging you need to pay attention to several things. Firstly, ensure that people within a 200 meter radius of the dengue fever case area have received information about the fogging schedule. So the building is empty of residents, especially the elderly, pregnant women and toddlers.

“Then the homeowner must also store the items they hope for in a safe and closed place. Likewise with food and eating utensils. Then the stove and electrical appliances must be turned off. “And pets such as cats, birds and dogs were evacuated,” he said.

After fogging, people also need to pay attention to the residue of the active fogging ingredients. Because it will stick to all surfaces for two weeks. So special attention is needed to clean the surface of objects affected by fogging.

On the other hand, he added, in conditions of high rainfall, the number of dengue cases tends to increase. Vice versa, when the intensity of rainfall is low, the number of dengue fever cases tends to be low.

High rainfall intensity will result in increased standing water, as a breeding place for Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, which are vectors for transmitting dengue fever. As a result, the adult mosquito population increases and dengue transmission increases.

“Until now there is no specific drug or vaccine, but if patients seek treatment early and receive adequate management, generally cases of this disease can be saved,” said Susan.

Reducing the dengue mortality rate requires a well-organized process from the initial diagnosis to the referral stage. This can be achieved by increasing public awareness and understanding regarding the importance of bringing dengue fever patients to health service facilities. (Ananto Wibowo)
