Rising Cases of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and Increased Efforts in West Kalimantan

Officers carry out fogging or fumigation in settlements that are positive for DHF. In West Kalimantan, 19 people have died throughout 2023 due to dengue.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PONTIANAK — Head of the West Kalimantan Province Health Office (Dinkes) Erna Yulianti said there was an increase in cases of death due to hemorrhagic fever dengue (DHF) in the region. The death toll so far is 19 people.

“As of August 2023, the West Kalimantan Health Office has recorded 1,306 cases DBD reported from various regions in West Kalimantan. This figure reflects an increase in dengue cases compared to the same period the previous year which only had more than 900 cases, which is a serious concern for the authorities and the general public,” said Erna in Pontianak, Friday (11/8/2023).

In this regard, he emphasized the importance of active collaboration between the Provincial Health Office and health offices at the district/city level. Erna asked local health officials to increase monitoring, prevention and control efforts dengue disease in their respective areas.

This step involves educating the public about preventive measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of disease transmission caused by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. In addition, in an emergency response effort, the West Kalimantan Provincial Health Office has taken concrete steps by distributing DHF management logistics throughout West Kalimantan to reduce the number of DHF cases at the local level, including the provision of equipment and materials needed to reduce the population of disease-carrying mosquitoes.

“We hope that district and city level health offices can be more proactive in reminding the public to apply the 3M principles to reduce the risk of DHF transmission. The 3M principles include draining the bathtub regularly, closing water reservoirs tightly, and burying used items that can become breeding ground for Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes,” he said.

In dealing with this situation, according to him, the active participation of the community is also an important key in controlling DHF. “The West Kalimantan Health Office invites the public to pay more attention to their surroundings and participate in prevention efforts, such as cleaning up stagnant water which has the potential to become a breeding ground for mosquitoes,” he said.

It is hoped that this awareness raising and collective action will help reduce the number of dengue cases in West Kalimantan. “The West Kalimantan Health Office remains committed to continuing to take preventive action, increasing coordination across sectors, and involving all components of society in a joint effort to fight this disease,” said Erna.
