Rising Cases of Debt Collectors Withdrawing Vehicles, Here’s Leasing’s Response

Jakarta

Recently, cases of forced withdrawal of vehicles by debt collectors have resurfaced. The reason for this forced retrieval is usually due to arrears in payment of the vehicle credit.

Responding to this, Astra Financial Director Handoko Liem said, every year the number of cases of arrears in credit payments is quite high. According to him, this condition can occur because many people buy products beyond their financial capabilities.

“Wow, there are a lot of (delinquent cases). I mean, many are tempted by a cheap down payment, but he earns Rp. 8 million, so he wants to buy an Innova. If it’s Rp. 8 million, it’s more for Agya, whose installments are cheap, Rp. 2 million,” said Handoko, when met at Menara Astra, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (8/3/2023).

He also did not deny that credit arrears were often collected through debt collectors in the leasing industry. Handoko added, in every credit activity there is always the risk of forced withdrawals from payment service providers.

“Try if you take a house loan agreement. Is there a house being withdrawn or not? There must be. All (credit products) are there. For people who break the commitment there must be (withdrawals). But the treatment for each is different, right. The consequences,” he said .

Meanwhile, according to him, the default case occurred naturally, influenced by economic conditions. If the debtor’s economy is good, the number of cases tends to decrease. Vice versa, if the economy is stable and good, cases will decrease.

Handoko further said, ideally people take a maximum installment of one third of their salary. With this principle, it is hoped that credit arrears can be avoided.

“That’s what we teach. If you want installments, it’s a third of your income. The income is Rp. 10 million, the maximum installment is Rp. 3 million, that’s it. If you earn Rp. 7 million, it’s overdrawn. That’s what we expect,” he explained.

As additional information, lately there have been cases of forcible taking of vehicles. One of them happened to celebrity Clara Shinta. At the end of last February, a video went viral on social media of a policeman being yelled at by a debt collector who was pulling the celebrity’s vehicle.

Clara said the debt collector yelled at the police because he didn’t want to be taken to the nearest police station. He also said that the incident began when the debt collector intended to take his private car by force. Clara Shinta asked the debt collector to wait because she was worried that this incident was just a fad.

“Like in the video, because the police directed me to the police station, I asked for 1 hour to wait for my family to arrive, whether this letter is true or not,” said Clara Shinta when contacted, Monday (20/2).

Not wanting to wait, continued Clara Shinta, the debt collector rushed away and yelled at the police. He said the debt collector did not want to be mediated to the nearest police station.

“Because now there are many mods suddenly claiming to be debt collectors. I asked to wait 1 hour, I didn’t want them to rush away, finally the police said, ‘We are already at the police station.’ The debt collector didn’t want to go to the police station, so there were shouts from the police. ,” he explained.

“The point is the police were yelled at for directing us to go to the police station but the DC didn’t want to. The reason is like in the video they have other assignments and jobs,” he explained.

Most recently, the debt collector has now been secured by the police on the report filed by Clara Shinta.
