Rising Cases of Child Respiratory Infections in China: WHO Requests More Information

In several hospitals in China, parents stand in lines, such as in a hospital in Chongqing. They are waiting for a consultation for their child with breathing problems.

Chinese health authorities have reported an increase in this number this fall. The Chinese government links this to the scaling down of Covid measures, causing respiratory infections to circulate more. However, since the second half of November, clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia have also occurred in children in northern China. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is not clear whether these are related to the previously reported increase in respiratory infections. The WHO has asked China for more epidemiological and clinical information.
