Bread has become significantly more expensive in the EU. The price of bread increased in August by almost a fifth compared to the same month last year, reports the European statistical office Eurostat.
In the Netherlands, the price has risen less rapidly than elsewhere in the EU: the price of bread has risen by almost 10 per cent.
In August, residents of Hungary paid around 66% more for their bread. This is by far the largest increase within the EU. Bread prices also increased significantly in Lithuania, Estonia and Slovakia, with increases of more than 30%.
A French baguette has only become 8% more expensive. Consumers were less impressed when paying there.
According to the statistical office, the sharp price increases are mainly due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russia and Ukraine export much of the cereals, maize, oilseeds and fertilizers we use to Europe. The war has disrupted the world markets for these products.
