Now it is up to the Conservative Party’s 200,000 members to choose which of them will be elected. The election results will be announced on 5 September.

In addition to becoming party leader, whoever emerges victorious will also become the country’s prime minister after Boris Johnson. He announced earlier in July that he will step down as soon as the party has chosen a successor.

Just after 4pm, Sir Graham Brady read out the result of the vote:

Sunak got 137 votes, while Truss got 113. Penny Morduant got 105 votes, and is thus out of the leadership race.

A FAVORITE: Sunak must be a favorite among the voters.

Rishi Sunak was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party in 2015, and is a former Chancellor of the Exchequer.

He was among the ministers who sent a letter of resignation to Boris Johnson on July 5. Together with Health Minister Sajid Javis, the two triggered the fallout that resulted in Johnson’s resignation.

ELECTION FIGHT: Truss won over Morduant and is running against Rishi Sunak.

Liz Truss was elected as an MP in 2010 and is the first female Conservative Foreign Secretary. She has also worked as international trade secretary, and her support for Brexit made her very popular in the Conservative party, writes Times.

– Thank you for trusting me, writes Truss on Twitter:
