LONDON (Reuters) – As Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murthy rise to the post of prime minister, they will get richer than occupying 10 Downing Street as they face an economic crisis and the government sees painful spending cuts.
In May, the couple ranked 122nd on the Sunday Times list of Britain’s richest people with a net worth of £ 730 million ($ 837 million), when Sunak was the first prominent politician to be included in the list since it was launched in 1989.
The Sonak family is richer than the richest former British Prime Minister, who was named by the Guinness Book of Records as Edward Stanley. The encyclopedia claimed that Stanley’s personal fortune, which exceeded seven million pounds in the nineteenth century, could now be worth around 450 million pounds.
When asked in August how he treats the public as richer than Queen Elizabeth, Sunak said people shouldn’t judge him negatively because of his wealth.
“I think in our country we judge people not by their bank accounts, but by their character and their actions,” he said at a leadership event in the north of England. And yes, I’m really lucky in the situation I’m in now, but I wasn’t born that way ”.
“My parents worked hard to provide me with all of these opportunities,” she said. I will not apologize for what they have done for me. In fact, that’s why I want to do this job because I want to offer these opportunities to everyone ”.
In a poll released Monday, the Savanta Comres Research Foundation asked voters to describe Sunak in one word. The results showed that one word was the most common answer, “rich”.
