British actress Andrea Riseborough’s Oscar nomination will not be withdrawn. The organization behind the Oscars announced this on Tuesday. She previously announced an investigation into the campaigning after Riseborough was surprisingly nominated for her role in the film To Leslie.
Various American media, including The Hollywood Reporterwrite about the decision. The Academy, the organization behind the ceremony, says it has no reason to withdraw the actress’s nomination.
The Academy does express its concerns about the way in which campaigning has been conducted on social media. “These tactics are being discussed directly with the responsible parties,” said Bill Kramer, who heads the Academy’s board of directors. It was not made clear who those parties are.
Previously, the reaction was with surprise. Because Riseborough has been nominated for the best actress award, while she was not on the list of strongest contenders for a nomination. Critics therefore wondered how it is possible that she was nominated out of the blue.
Still, several celebrities expressed support for Riseborough. Well-known actors such as Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow and Edward Norton praised the film.
Film studios pour millions of dollars into Oscar campaigns every year to promote films, actors and creators. The Oscar organization has previously announced an investigation into campaigning. The news around Riseborough is separate from this. The organization wants to see whether the guidelines need to be adjusted in “this new age of social media and digital communication”.
