VfB Oldenburg has prevailed in the promotion games against BFC Dynamo and is again third rate. After a 2-0 win in the first leg, the Lower Saxony were able to afford a 1-2 (1-1) draw in the second leg at their home Marschweg Stadium.

The spectators could hardly be held. With the final whistle, the Oldenburg fans stormed the pitch and celebrated their promotion heroes there. After a close and exhausting game in summer temperatures, the VfB players were exhausted in each other’s arms. “No more fourth division” they sang on the field – after 25 years, VfB is back in professional football despite the defeat! The BFC Dynamo remains in the Regionalliga Nordost. “We deservedly got promoted to the third division,” said coach Dario Fossi to NDR after the final whistle – and before his beer shower. “I’m proud of this team and this club.”

“I’m ambivalent. I’m very happy on the inside, but we could have been on the other side. I find it hard that Berlin, as champions, can’t go up in the end.”
Oldenburg-Trainer Dario Fossi

Goal scorer and team captain Max Wegner was above all relieved: “It’s mainly ballast that falls off.” The Lower Saxony had decided not to plan a promotion party, “we didn’t want that either, then it usually goes wrong,” says Wegner. Either way – the evening in Oldenburg should be longer for everyone involved.

Oldenburg with opportunities galore

The capitals tried to build up pressure from the start due to the problem of the first leg, but VfB had the chances. Wegner missed the huge opportunity to take the lead after a ricochet and was denied by BFC keeper Dmitri Stajila. In the 17th minute, after a hair-raising excursion from Stajila, and in the 28th minute, Oldenburg’s captain Wegner had another chance to score.

But it wasn’t until the 34th minute that the 33-year-old was finally able to celebrate. Wegner prevailed in the penalty area, also played around Stajlija and pushed in for a deserved lead. The stadium was upside down.

BFC surprisingly equalizes

The BFC, who had been disappointing across the board up to this point, now had their backs to the wall. But after falling behind, the Berliners woke up – and equalized. Niklas Brandt scored in the 44th minute to make it 1-1 at half-time. Otherwise, Oldenburg had the guests’ offensive under control, BFC striker Christian Beck was unsubscribed.

VfB lucky after the break

That changed in the second round – and put the Lower Saxony in distress. VfB lost access to the game, Berlin threw everything forward and had great chances. Within 60 seconds, Beck hit the post with his head and the crossbar in the subsequent corner (56′, 57′). VfB couldn’t stop the crosses to the Berliners’ center striker, Beck had the next opportunity to put Berlin ahead in the 67th minute. This time Marcel Appiah saved just before the line.

The VfB fans supported their team to the best of their ability. However, the hosts were increasingly running out. The focus was on not conceding another goal and bringing the draw over time. The BFC, on the other hand, was slowed down in its final offensive by its supporters who had traveled with them. The game was briefly interrupted due to pyrotechnics and police officers positioned themselves in front of the away block, and there was also eight minutes of stoppage time.

Berlin’s winning goal comes too late

In the sixth minute of added time, Andor Bolyki made it 2-1 for BFC. The ascent was again a nail-biter for VfB. The Oldenburgs threw themselves into every attack by the guests in the last few minutes – and were redeemed with the final whistle. The rest was cheers in blue and white.

The former second division team is about to win the regional league title. If he were promoted, he would probably have to move. The stadium is not suitable for the third division. more
