Rise in Unemployment Rates in the Freiburg District: July 2023 Labor Market Update

The number of unemployed in the district of the Freiburg Employment Agency increased seasonally in July. As of the reporting date, a total of 14,160 women and men were unemployed in the city of Freiburg and the districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald and Emmendingen. That is 311 people more than a month earlier. The unemployment rate rose by 0.1 points to 3.7 percent. Among young people, the rate is 0.2 points higher at 2.4 percent.

“The labor market has so far coped well with the downturn in the economy. An increase in the number of unemployed is completely normal at this time,” says Alexander Merk, CEO of the Freiburg Employment Agency. Numerous girls and boys have now finished their school and not all trainees have been taken on. Therefore, many of them first register as unemployed. The same applies to young people who start voluntary service or study after the holidays.

The demand for labor remains at a high level. “More and more people are retiring and triggering a need for replacement. That alone is enough to justify a shortage of skilled workers. We’re not even talking about the need for workers for new jobs,” says Merk. Because of the difficult economic environment, companies are reluctant to increase employment, but when the economic climate brightens again, this can be expected again.

Merk appeals to companies and young people to use the next few weeks to get together for vocational training. More than 1,000 young people are still looking for an apprenticeship and almost 1,800 apprenticeships for autumn are unfilled. “There’s still a lot possible for both sides,” says Merk.

Dynamics in the labor market
In the reporting period, 3,429 people registered as unemployed with little momentum. In the same period, 3,092 people ended their unemployment.

structure of the unemployed
While the number of long-term unemployed fell again slightly over the year, it increased among young people, older people, the severely disabled and, due to the crisis in Ukraine, above all among foreigners. According to legal groups, the following picture emerges: SGB III: 6,082 unemployed (share 43.0 percent), SGB II: 8,078 unemployed (share 57.0 percent).

labor demand
The demand for labor has increased noticeably. The companies reported 1,303 job vacancies. That is 222 or 20.5 percent more than in June and 184 or 16.4 percent more than a year ago. The greatest need by industry: trade (298), business-related services (200, including 160 from temporary work), health and social services (167 jobs), public administration (162 jobs), freelance, scientific and technical services (160), manufacturing Commercial (106).
