Rise in Streptococcal Infections in Sweden: Five Children Under Ten Die

A report by Sweden’s Public Health Authority revealed a significant rise in streptococcal infections in the country, leading to the deaths of five children under the age of ten in the first seven months of the year.

The bacteria are known as streptococci or streptococci, and there are several types of them, some of which are dangerous to health.

And according to what was reported by the Swedish “Aker” network, since last January, the Health Authority has recorded 750 cases of severe group A streptococcal infection, which is twice the number recorded during the past year, when it reached 369 cases.

The expert doctor, Eric Storegord, attributed the reasons for the current increase in the number of infections to the years of the Corona pandemic, which witnessed a decline in social gatherings and the isolation of individuals from each other, which reduced the transmission of infection.

The expert said: “Despite the sharp increase this year compared to the years of the pandemic, we see that the current number of infections exceeds even the years preceding Corona.”

Regarding the infected groups, Storegord said, “There is a clear increase in the spread of infection among children, but it is a disease that usually affects adults to a greater extent.”

The Public Health Authority stated that the infection is transmitted from one person to another when sneezing or coughing by inhaling droplets that contain bacteria, and it also spreads through contact with infected skin, and from mother to child at birth.
