Rise in Impetigo Cases Among Babies and Children: Causes and Concerns

GPs are increasingly seeing babies and children aged 0 to 4 with the highly contagious and itchy impetigo. Impetigo is an infectious disease that causes wounds and blisters on the face and is a result of the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria or the Group A streptococcus bacteria. Normally, the number of children with impetigo only increases in autumn. This is reported by NU.nl.

According to Nivel, more than 300 per 100,000 children aged 0 to 4 years are infected with impetigo. Around this time, that number is normally about 150 per 100,000 children. The health institute suspects that the beautiful weather of recent times plays a role. “Children go outside more, wear less clothes and go swimming together.” This increases the chance of skin-to-skin contact with others.

RIVM is not yet concerned about the increase in impetigo, but the situation is being closely monitored. Impetigo is not necessarily dangerous for children, they are prescribed a cream with an antibiotic. Women who have just given birth should be extra alert. Impetigo and puerperal fever are caused by the same bacteria.
