Last year, 403,000 immigrants came to the Netherlands. That is 151,000 more than a year earlier. This increase is mainly explained by the war in Ukraine.
Migration figures are higher for the first time than in 2019, the last year before the corona pandemic. A large part of this increase is related to the war in Ukraine, Statistics Netherlands reports.
In 2022, more people from outside the European Union came to our country compared to the year before. That number increased by 140,000 to 230,000 immigrants.
Almost half of them came to the Netherlands by making use of the Temporary Protection Directive. Because of the war in Ukraine, people can be taken care of here. They have the right to shelter and medical care, and children have the right to education.
People came to the Netherlands for different reasons. The number of people who came here because part of the family was already here has also increased.
More than half of the asylum seekers came from Syria. Others mainly came from Turkey, Afghanistan, Yemen and Eritrea.
Also more highly skilled and labor migrants
The number of highly skilled and labor migrants will increase by 65 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year. These are mainly people from India, but last year there were also more Russian labor migrants: that number has tripled.
In 2021, 87,000 labor migrants from outside the EU lived in the Netherlands. These are mainly Asian men under the age of forty.
Almost half of them are highly skilled migrants. These are highly educated workers recruited by Dutch employers, people who conduct scientific research or employees who are relocated to foreign locations.
