Rise in Compensation Payments in Hesse for Unjust Detention and Unlawful License Revocations

Hesse is paying more and more compensation for people who were unjustly in custody or whose driver’s license was unlawfully revoked. In 2022 it was almost 676,900 euros and thus more than twice as much as in 2019 with almost 331,300 euros, as the Ministry of Justice in Wiesbaden announced on request. In 2020, around 532,400 euros were paid out under the Law on Compensation for Criminal Prosecution Measures (StrEG), in 2021 almost 663,960 euros. The number of cases changed little during this period, it was between 121 and 134 in each of the four years.
