Rise in Anti-Semitic and Islamophobic Incidents in US Linked to Israel-Palestine Conflict

Anti-Semitic and Islamophobic incidents are on the rise in the US due to the war between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas, the government has warned.

According to information provided by the US Department of Justice, 21-year-old Patrick Dye posted a “call to kill Jews” on a university discussion forum and expressed his readiness to carry out a shooting at the cafeteria, which is mostly occupied by Jewish students and is located next to the Cornell Jewish Center.

“In another post, Dai allegedly threatened to stab and cut the throats of any Jewish men he saw on campus, rape and throw all Jewish women off a cliff, and decapitate all Jewish babies,” the US Department of Justice said in a statement, adding that Dai also threatened to shoot a Jew. students on campus.

He was arrested on Tuesday and charged with threatening to kill or injure another person.

“At Cornell University, we will not tolerate anti-Semitism; indeed, we will not tolerate hatred of any kind, including racism or Islamophobia,” Cornell University President Martha Pollack said Thursday.

US Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that threats against the Jewish, Muslim and Arab communities in the US have increased significantly.

A 71-year-old Illinois man has been charged with stabbing a six-year-old Palestinian-American boy. The attack was motivated by the war between Israel and Hamas.

After Dai’s arrest, the chancellors of nine Israeli universities claimed in an open letter to their American counterparts that many US campuses had become “hotbeds of anti-Israel and anti-Semitic sentiment fueled in large part by a naïve and biased understanding of the conflict.”

At Harvard, Stanford and New York University, disagreements between students, faculty and administration have turned into viral debates on social media. At Harvard, a statement signed by several student groups said they “hold the Israeli regime fully responsible for all of the ongoing violence” at Harvard.
