Ahmed Al-Zeini, head of the Building Materials Division at the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, said that the prices of building materials witnessed a state of confusion during the months of December and January as a result of the rise in dollar prices in the parallel market. He pointed in particular to the three-fold increase in the price of iron at the beginning of January, as it jumped from 45 to 55 thousand pounds per ton on the factory floor, and the consumer price reached 62 thousand pounds.
In a telephone interview on the program “In the Evening with Qaswa” on the CBC channel, Al-Zeini explained that after the decline in the price of the dollar in the parallel market and the state’s intervention, a decrease in the prices of building materials by 10 to 12 thousand pounds was achieved.
He pointed out that the prices of building materials currently range between 48 and 49,920 pounds per ton on the factory floor, and between 50 and 52 or 53 thousand pounds for the consumer in the governorates of Upper Egypt. He stressed that building materials are available in sufficient quantities, and that cement prices are stable.
Al-Zaini pointed out that there is a state of stagnation in the market, expecting a decline in the prices of building materials after the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
