The latest riots broke out in Imphal, which is the state capital of Manipur, Indiawhich is the location two women paraded naked and mass raped. The riots broke out when thousands of people, especially women, staged demonstrations by blocking roads and burning tires.
As reported India TodaySunday (23/7/2023), the demonstration which was held on Saturday (22/7) local time turned tense after the demonstrators, who were mostly women, increased in number and carried out a roadblock action in the Ghari area.
The demonstrators also shouted anti-government slogans in their action.
Police Manipur assisted by military personnel and a rapid action battalion were deployed to the location to control the situation.
The situation got hotter when the demonstrators carried out the action of burning tires at the demonstration site. Security personnel quickly extinguished the fire and reportedly fired tear gas at the demonstrators to disperse them.
The protest was in response to a viral video showing two women from the Kuki ethnic minority in Manipur being paraded naked and reportedly gang-raped. The incident occurred in the early days of the inter-ethnic conflict that has gripped Manipur state since last May.
The video was recorded on May 4, but only went viral on July 19. Manipur police have so far arrested six suspects, including a minor, in connection with the incident which sparked public outrage.
