Riots in Dagestan: Anti-Israel Protests at Airport Prompt Closure

A number of Russian Telegram channels report on the riots on Sunday evening.

Russian Izvestia first reported several thousand rioters near the airport, reportedly holding anti-Israel posters and shouting pro-Palestine slogans.

The population of Dagestan is predominantly Muslim.

The independent Russian online newspaper Medusa writes that a dozen people must have stormed the runway.

Pictures and video said to be from the airport show a large group surrounding a plane on the runway.

Telegram channels Sota reports that special forces are to be sent to the runway, while the channel Beware News reports that the police must have jammed communications in the area to avoid coordinating further actions.

At 19.45 Reuters reports that the airport is closed for both arrivals and departures due to people on the runway. Scheduled arrivals will be diverted to other airports.

According to the independent Russian online newspaper Mediazona several “anti-Semitic” actions have been held in the North Caucasus during the weekend.

In advance of the airport storming, several Telegram channels are said to have published claims about “Israeli refugees” on their way to Dagestan, the newspaper writes, and encouraged people to participate in a gathering near the airport and check cars.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it considers the riots “serious attempts to harm Israelis or Jews”, reports Reuters.

Dagbladet updates the case!
