Referring to AFP, at least eight people have been arrested in connection with the riots in Sunderland which left three police officers injured. The riots were linked to a stabbing attack which killed three girls in the Southport area earlier this week.

Northumbria Police Chief Inspector Helena Barron said in a statement that three police officers required medical treatment in hospital after encountering ongoing levels of violence in the Sunderland area.

Riots broke out in Sunderland after a crowd of hundreds of people marched through the city centre. They attacked the police at the location and burnt at least one car and a building adjacent to the local police station.

In addition, mobs of youths wearing balaclavas, or face coverings, threw bricks and other objects.

Far-right groups have been blamed for the riots following a stabbing attack targeting children attending a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport.

The unrest began after misinformation spread widely online about the identity and motive of the Southport murder suspect, who has been named as Axel Rudakubana, a 17-year-old from Cardiff of Rwandan parents.

Judge Andrew Menary KC ruled that Rudakubana’s name should be reported to prevent the spread of disinformation. Rudakubana is expected to return to court in October charged with the murders of Alice Dasilva Aguiar (9 years), Elsie Dot Stancombe (7 years), and Bebe King (6 years), as well as the attempted murder of 10 other people.

Mosques in Southport and Hartlepool were attacked by rioters on Tuesday and Wednesday following unfounded rumors online that the suspect was a Muslim. In Manchester and Aldershot, accommodation for asylum seekers was targeted by demonstrators carrying posters reading “get rid of them, don’t support them” and “no apartments for illegals”. .
