Riots broke out during the semi-finals of the Sachsenpokal. Fans ignited massive Pyros, a toilet house burned down, the police brought a water cannon into position.
The cup game between the regional league team BSG Chemie Leipzig and the third division football team FSV Zwickau was overshadowed by riots on Thursday evening. The police spoke of “various riots” from the start.
Several hooded spectators therefore hit officials and tried to overcome barriers. Both fan camps would have ignited Pyros. A mobile toilet house caught fire during the first half. A water cannon from the riot police had to put it out.
Semi-finals in Leipzig: chemistry celebrates, Zwickau fires
After the final whistle, home fans stormed the field to celebrate their team’s victory. Meanwhile, they were shot at with pyrotechnics from the ranks of the Zwickau fans.
Police recorded around a dozen crimes during the game, including assault, property damage and resisting law enforcement officers. After the match, there was a physical altercation between rival fans at a motorway service station in Grimma. Three people were slightly injured. A backpack with fan paraphernalia was also stolen from a car.
Fans reported a massive police operation during the game. One asked on Twitter: “Are there actually more fans or police officers in the stadium?” Among other things, the police were on site with a cavalry squadron.
Penalty shootout decides cup game
There was also plenty of sporting activity in the Alfred-Kunze-Sportpark, which was sold out with 4,999 spectators. Alexander Bury gave the underdog from Leipzig the lead in the 16th minute. Marco Schikora equalized in the 52nd minute.
In extra time, Zwickau’s Nils Butzen saw the yellow-red card (119th). Both teams still had chances to score the winning goal. The decision was only made after a penalty shoot-out. Zwickau’s Max Reinthaler shot the last penalty over the box. The game ended with 5:4 for chemistry.
In the final of the Sachsenpokal, Leipzig coach Miroslav Jagatic’s team will now meet their league rivals Chemnitzer FC, who beat the state league team SG Motor Wilsdruff 2-0 in the first semi-final on Tuesday.
