Riot explains: This is how VALORANT twitch drops really work

Much has been discussed in the past few days since last Friday viewers were able to receive VALORANT Drops via Twitch.tv Streams, about probabilities, the total number of keys issued and many other factors. Official information from Riot Games was difficult or impossible to find.

If at all, these were second-hand or had to be laboriously read out in articles between the lines. Not anymore. On Wednesday evening, Riot Games wrote a detailed article about the first official beta day, audience numbers and the distribution system behind the drops.

This is how the VALORANT drops work

The persons in charge deal with the latter point in particular, since many players who have not yet had access despite the many hours they have watched feel unjustly treated or find the whole system “unfair”. Against this background, Riot Games explains that all viewers who have actively watched a VALORANT stream with activated drops on Twitch in at least about two hours will be put on a list. Additional time watched is also saved.

Any player on this list is potentially eligible for a drop. The statement also refers to the peak value of a total of 1.7 million simultaneous viewers who watched VALORANT on Twitch.tv. There were many more spread over the day yesterday.

The list mentioned above is constantly checked by employees and a few percent of the accounts on this list are selected for access. The distribution would only be stopped temporarily if there were acute problems with the servers. In most cases, the selection happens – provided the accounts are correctly linked and the two hours of watch are given – randomly. However, the chance of a drop increases for an additional amount of time. However, the probability never increases to 100 percent, the exact increase Riot Games keeps to itself.

The announcement also appeals to the health of the audience. You shouldn’t actively track a stream for several additional hours for a marginally higher chance of access. In addition, Riot also says a few words to desperate fans who want to use account sellers to give them a chance to play the closed beta right away. So you look at the processes very carefully. Anyone who buys an account must also expect that it may be banned.

Who is on the list is on the list

Several screenshots of Twitch users who had received two VALORANT Beta Drops in their inventory circulated on Twitter – at least that was how the interface displayed. This is actually only a display error, the statement further explains. The additions would not be distributed twice and therefore did not depend on the total number of invited players.

The best news last: You don’t have to actively watch a stream at the exact moment when drops for VALORANT are distributed to Twitch. As soon as you are registered on the list described above, you have the chance to be one of the winners with every drawing. So you can take a break from the “grind” without any worries. So it is still not necessary to watch several streams in parallel or to keep one channel running all night.

About VALORANT

VALORANT is the new first person shooter from Riot Games. The makers of the famous League of Legends are expanding their games portfolio in several genres. The game, formerly called “Project A”, is a competitive 5-on-5 FPS game that is slated for release in summer 2020. The gameplay can best be described as a mixture of Valves Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Blizzards Overwatch.

In Valorant, Riot Games attaches great importance to a good netcode, stable servers and a sophisticated anti-cheat system in order to make the gaming experience as fair as possible. VALORANT should also look good on older computers.
