Hundreds of people demonstrated on Jalan MT Haryono, Kendari City, Southeast Sulawesi (Sultra), Thursday (17/9) yesterday afternoon. Demo this led to a riot, they even damaged public facilities such as traffic lights and blocked road users.
Head of the Public Relations Division of the Southeast Sulawesi Regional Police, Kombes Ferry Walintukan, said that around 200 Kendari Police officers were deployed to dispel the masses. The demonstration that led to clashes between residents and police officers also left two policemen injured.
“We have to make sure that it is anarchist, two of our members were hit by stones,” Ferry was quoted as saying on the broadcast CNNIndonesia TV, Friday (18/9).
The demo was held at the KFC intersection Jl. MT Haryono and Lippo Plaza Kendari intersection made the people in the locations afraid. Residents inside the shopping center were also seen scattering in panic.
Ferry continued the action which ended in chaos was successfully dispersed at 16.00 WIT, after the police fired tear gas shots at the crowd. Currently his party is investigating the vandalism committed by the demo participants.
“There are about 4-5 people who are secured, the latest data is yes,” he said.
Furthermore, Ferry suspected that the action was the aftermath of complaints from a number of groups in Kendari City who were protesting the handling of cases of hate speech on social media. The masses urged the Kendari Police to solve the case immediately.
However, Ferry admitted that he still did not know in more detail which mass group carried out the action. Therefore, his party will investigate the riots that occurred in Kendari City.
