Riobamba Hospital celebrates success in donating 300 liters of breast milk, 300 liters of love – Ministry of Public Health

August 13, 2024

The Riobamba Provincial General Teaching Hospital has a Human Milk Bank that is responsible for the collection, processing, dispensing and quality control of milk. So far in 2024, around 300 liters of milk have been collected, thanks to the support of more than 500 donor mothers.

Breast milk is a vital food for newborns, which is why the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) promotes exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life and, as a complement, up to two years of age.

Raquel Robalino, a nurse at the Milk Bank of the Riobamba Hospital, said that “feeding with breast milk is safe, it contains antibodies that help prevent future diseases, and it also benefits mothers as it reduces the risk of contracting breast cancer and cervical cancer. It also represents a financial saving by not having to buy breast milk substitutes.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends starting breastfeeding within the first hour of life to provide children with the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development.

Graciela Almeida has been attending the Milk Bank for seven months and says that using this service has helped her improve milk production and maintain exclusive breastfeeding. “My son is strong and healthy, thanks to all the benefits my milk provides him,” she concluded.

The Milk Bank of the Hospital of Riobamba offers education, stimulation and breast decongestion. For attention or advice on this service, users can come to the bank during business hours from Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 15:30 or call 03 (2) 628075 ext. 3808.

More than just milk, it is an act of love and life. Breast milk is the first food for babies, providing the nutrients necessary for healthy growth and strengthening their immune system.#ElNuevoEcuadorResolves
