Rio de Janeiro carnival canceled due to pandemic

The Rio Carnival was canceled for the second year in a row due to the pandemic, and Mayor Eduard Paes told social media on Tuesday after a meeting with members of the carnival.

It would be practically impossible to hold a street carnival while at the same time ensuring access restrictions and other Covid-19 crisis requirements for street parties with hundreds of groups registered, the mayor explained.

More than three million people attended the last four-day event at the last Rio Carnival in 2020, according to G1.

However, the Sambadrom parade will take place in February and March. As the mayor explained, these measures are easier to control.

In Brazil, with a population of 210 million, 22 million have been confirmed with the Covid-19 virus, according to official estimates.

The number of Covid-19-related deaths has reached 618,000. In absolute terms, the United States alone has the highest number of deaths worldwide.

As the vaccination campaign gains momentum, the number of deaths has fallen sharply.

Almost 70% of the Brazilian population is fully vaccinated.

Since the first cases of omicron were confirmed in the country in early December, the number of positive tests has risen again.
