Rio celebrates carnival without corona restrictions

The carnival has started in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Mayor Eduardo Paes handed over the key to the city to “King Momo”, the symbolic ruler of the celebrations. Momo also presides over the samba school parades that begin on Sunday. The dancers compete in front of tens of thousands of people for the prize for the best performance. For the first time since the beginning of the corona pandemic, the carnival in Rio will take place again without restrictions. The mayor thanked science, the health system and those who had been vaccinated. So you can “celebrate life again”. In 2021 the carnival was completely canceled, the following year the parades were postponed from February to April. The big street parties organized by the carnival groups, the “blocos”, did not take place. This year again more than five million visitors are expected at around 400 events.
