Ring: Its limits and when it returns – The exceptions –

From the Monday October 14, 2024 up to and including Friday, July 18, 2025 the restrictive measures of vehicle traffic in the center of Athens are back (Small Ring).

The boundaries of the ring

The ring will extend to the following streets and avenues

L. Alexandras – Zakharov – L. Mesogeion – Fidippidou – Michalakopoulou – Sp. Merkouri – Vryaxidos – Ymitou – Iliou Island – Ambr. Frantzi – L. Andr. Sygrou – Hamosterna – Piraeus – Iera Odos – L. Konstantinoupoleos – Achilleos – Pl. Karaiskaki – Karolou – Marni – 28her October (Patision) – L. Alexandras.

On the border avenues and streets of the SMALL RING the restriction measures do not apply.

On the streets and boulevards enclosed by the SMALL RING, only rotating traffic of I.X.E. is allowed. cars, as well as private-use cars and vans with a maximum permissible laden vehicle mass (MAMF) of up to 2.2 tonnes, based on the last digit of their registration number (odd – even).

The exceptions

They are not subject to the above prohibitions and they circulate without any restriction to the LITTLE RING the vehicles of the categories that are exempt from the restrictions, as well as the vehicles of the categories that are required to be equipped with special permits, which are granted by the Attica Traffic Directorate, in accordance with the provisions of No. 195948 from 07/10.10.2024 (Government Gazette 5627, vol. B) of Joint Ministerial Decision.

In particular can print a special badge for their exceptional traffic in the center of Athens, electronically through the Unified Digital Portal of the Public Administration (gov.gr) either in paper form or in electronic form registered on a mobile phone the principals and/or owners:

  • From the manufacture of purely electric vehicles, as well as from the manufacture of hybrid electric vehicles, natural gas and LPG vehicles,
  • EURO 6 cars, except for the above drive technologies, as long as they emit carbon dioxide less than 120g/km (combined cycle value, according to the New European Driving Cycle/NEDC), which were classified for the first time in a state- member of the European Union until 31.12.2020),
  • EURO 6 cars other than the above drive technologies, as long as they emit carbon dioxide less than 145g/km (combined cycle value according to the Worldwide Light Test Procedure/WLTP), which were classified for the first time in a state- member of the European Union from 01.01.2021 onwards.

What applies to permanent residents and the hours of the measure

For their vehicles permanent residents inside the SMALL RING, special entry-exit zones are provided and a special card is issued by the competent Services of the Municipality of Athens.

The days and hours of validity of the above restrictive measures are as follows:

Monday up to Thursdayhours 07.00΄ up to 20.00΄,

Fridayhours 07.00΄ up to 15.00΄.

On Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, as well as on days when workers are on strike in all Public Transport, the measures do not apply.

Applications for the issuance of special traffic permits may be submitted during the days Monday to Friday and from 08:00 to 14:00 & Saturday from 08:00 to 12:00 at the headquarters of the Attica Traffic Directorate [Θ. Δηλιγιάννη 24-26, Γραφείο Δακτυλίου στο ισόγειο του κτιρίου (είσοδος από οδό Σάμου), τηλ.210-5284142, emaildaktylios@astynomia.gr] by presenting, in addition to the more specific documents/justifications and photocopies of the interested party:

a) Traffic Permit of the vehicle.

b) Driving License of the drivers.

c) Valid Technical Inspection Certificate (K.T.E.O.).

d) Valid insurance policy.

The special traffic permits in the LITTLE RING, which had been granted by the Attica Traffic Directorate for the period 2023-2024 are still valid until 18-7-2025.

Violators of these restrictive measures are punished according to the provisions of the article 52 par. 6 of the Road Traffic Code.
