Rijkswaterstaat will install nets at the ferry ports of Texel and Den Helder due to crumbling concrete. The concrete structure is no longer in good condition, causing chunks of concrete to crumble.

This concerns the so-called landings at the ferry ports, the structures where the ferries moor. The concrete at both landings has deteriorated in several places, inspections have shown.

“This is mainly due to the age of the structures and existing damage. As a result, chunks of concrete have recently fallen out,” Rijkswaterstaat reports. The organization emphasizes that the safety of the concrete structures is not at risk.

No consequences for ferry service

Rijkswaterstaat has already tried to do something about it by knocking off the concrete or filling it, but that did not help. The nets should reduce the risk of falling chunks and grit from the concrete. According to Rijkswaterstaat, this is a temporary solution. The ferry port landings are outdated and will be replaced in a few years.

After the first pieces of concrete crumbled in December, barriers were placed in front of the landings. There has also been an investigation into the repair of the concrete. This showed that there is an increased risk at both ferry ports in several places where the concrete could come loose, reports NH News.

To prevent more chunks and grit from falling from the concrete, a large net will be stretched against the concrete structures from Monday, first in Den Helder and later on Texel. Rijkswaterstaat expects it to take about four weeks. The intention is that travelers will notice little or nothing of it.
