Rijkswaterstaat has reached a settlement with the Levvel consortium for additional work on the Afsluitdijk. Minister Harbers (Infrastructure and Water Management) reports in a brief to the House of Representatives that the consortium will receive 238 million euros for the extra work.
The renovation of the Afsluitdijk started in 2018. This year it will be 90 years since the construction of the dike was completed. It should be a festive year, with a completed renovation, but at the end of 2020 became clear already that the renovation would take longer.
Rijkswaterstaat had supplied the consortium with incorrect information since the start of the project. As a result, several of the consortium’s designs had to be adapted. In addition to payment of the amount, it was decided to take the renovation and reinforcement of the current discharge sluices and their maintenance out of the contract with Levvel.
Tender
The discharge sluices are used to drain water into the Wadden Sea. This contract will be tendered again. The money that should be saved with this is partly used to pay the 238 million.
It is unclear when the entire project will be completed. Harbers does say that “a large part” of Levvel’s work should be completed by the end of this year. It is not yet clear how much the renovation of the discharge sluices will cost, because it still has to be put out to tender.
