Rijkswaterstaat Implements Heat Protocol for Stranded Motorists during Heatwave

This weekend was the first time this year that Rijkswaterstaat has set up a heat protocol. The protocol applies on Monday, just like on weekends, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is active on Monday for all provinces except Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe.

On Saturday it applied in the provinces of Gelderland, Utrecht, North and South Holland, Zeeland, North Brabant and Limburg, on Sunday for the entire country. The last time such a protocol was in effect was in August last year.

At temperatures higher than 30 degrees, Rijkswaterstaat considers it undesirable to leave stranded road users waiting for help on a hot roadside for a long time. A recovery company will therefore take motorists with a breakdown as quickly as possible to a place with facilities and shade, such as a petrol station.

People who go out on Saturday are also advised to bring enough water and a parasol, or an umbrella that serves as a parasol. In addition, it is requested to keep cigarette butts and other waste on board to prevent roadside fires.

There will also be more public transport to the beaches this weekend: there will be more trains between Haarlem and Zandvoort. The Hague transport company HTM uses the so-called Strandexpress, a tram that runs to Scheveningen on top of the normal timetable. And from Rotterdam extra metros go to the beach of Hoek van Holland.
