Rijkswaterstaat expects record high level Maas on Thursday evening | Inland

During the high water of 1995, the Meuse reached a comparable water level. This caused major flooding throughout Limburg. The situation is different now, because since the 1990s the river has been given much more space and dikes have been improved. According to Rijkswaterstaat, a discharge of 3000 cubic meters of water per second at Sint Pieter only occurs once every fifty years and almost never in the summer.

The high water wave will reach Roermond on Friday, will arrive on the border of Gelderland and Limburg on Saturday and will arrive at Den Bosch on Sunday. Rijkswaterstaat, water boards and municipalities are taking numerous measures to prevent flooding as much as possible. Roads are closed and bulkheads are installed. Campsites along the river must be evacuated and livestock must be removed from the pasture.
