Moscow. The most visited museum in the Netherlands, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, closed its doors on Saturday due to a demonstration by environmental activists from the Extinction Rebellion movement, DutchNews reported.
“The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam was closed on Saturday morning until further notice (…). Protesters chained themselves to the entrance gates to the museum’s pedestrian and bicycle underpass,” the website said.
The movement on its social media page X said it would not stop the action until the Rijksmuseum ended its sponsorship ties with the financial corporation ING.
Extinction Rebellion spokesperson Josefien van Marlen warned that “the museum gives this big polluter the opportunity to hide its dirty face behind famous works of art.”
The portal also points out that eco-activists from the movement had previously attempted to take action against ING, blocking the Amsterdam ring road near the corporation’s former headquarters. Extinction Rebellion claims that the company is responsible for financing the fuel industry.
The Dutch financial corporation is engaged in various types of banking operations, asset management and insurance services.
