Rijksmuseum Boerhaave postpones exhibition on infectious diseases NOW

Rijksmuseum Boerhaave in Leiden presents the exhibition Infected! from. The exhibition, which is about the outbreak of infectious diseases and how they can disrupt life, would be opened on April 15 by King Willem-Alexander.

“Apart from the temporary closure, the museum also wants to take time to adapt the exhibition to various aspects of the new reality,” the museum said in a press release.

“The museum started preparations two years ago Infected! with the wish to create a very current exhibition. “

The coronavirus outbreak has caused the exhibition to be overtaken by current events on a number of points, according to the museum.

“At the same time, this also offers the opportunity to supplement the exhibition with personal stories and objects from this turbulent time, which marks our history. And that is what we want to offer as a museum: a stage for the future.”

It is not yet known when the exhibition will be opened after all. The Leiden museum is currently closed due to the measures that apply to the corona virus.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads through sneezes and cough drops. The virus can be transmitted directly from person to person or (for a limited time) through surfaces such as door handles.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Nearly all deaths involve the elderly or other frail, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
