Rihanna and Donald Glover’s new movie ‘Guava Island’ premieres THIS weekend

Rihanna and Donald Glover are both established names in the entertainment industry. Aside from her incredible music, Rihanna also has her very successful beauty brand Fenty Beauty and her Savage x Fenty lingerie line. That didn’t stop the bayan beauty from starring in films as well. She has starred in everything from the enchanting animated film Home to the hit comedy Ocean’s 8.

If there’s one person in Hollywood who can hold a candle to the anti-singer, it’s Atlanta creator Donald Glover. Known for his music persona Childish Gambino, the cult series Community and his role as Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story – there is nothing that Rihanna or Glover cannot. That’s why everyone was thrilled last year when random photos of the two of them turned up on the internet, shooting some film with Al Gore. Here’s what we know about Guava Island.

What is Rihanna and Donald Glover’s new movie, Guava Island, about?

Written by the brother of “Atlanta” creator Stephen Glover and directed by Hiro Murai – Guava Island is a tropical thriller set in Havana, Cuba. The short and very mysterious description of the film is: “On Guava Island a local musician is determined to put on a festival open to all.” We just assume that the “musician” is Glover and that Rihanna plays a breathtakingly beautiful woman he would never dream of approaching. Black Panther breakthrough star Letitia Wright also stars in the film. Vanity Fair was able to find out some more details about Guava Island. They reported

[Guava Island] is a music-powered, hour-long film, largely secretly shot in Havana, inspired by Fernando Meirelles’ Brazilian crime drama City of God and Prince’s Purple Rain. New Regency met with Glover in February 2018 when he first got the idea, and they immediately said yes. Amazon Studios boss Jennifer Salke decided to leaf out a hefty chunk of the e-tailer’s change to distribute the film after seeing a four and a half minute sizzle reel via a one-time viewing link that expired 30 minutes after receiving it.

Where can you see Guava Island?

You can see Guava Island (but especially Rihanna) this weekend. The film will premiere on Amazon Prince this Saturday, April 13th, 2019. It will be free from 12:01 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., after which it will be available to Prime members. The film will also debut on Coachella’s live stream.

Vanity Fair reports: “… the team was attracted by New Regency as a production and financing partner and by Amazon as a sales partner, especially by the willingness of the online retailer to publish the mini-film in front of its paywall and via the Coachella livestream.
