Right-wing parties are close to ending years of socialist dominance in the country’s political life, preliminary voting results from Sunday’s parliamentary elections show.
According to Portuguese media, after processing 75% of the ballots, the right-wing Democratic Alliance coalition takes first place with 31.36% of the votes, the Socialists come in second with 28.84% of the votes. In third place is the ultra-right party “Enough!”, which has recently gained popularity. (Chega), which was voted for by 19.3% of voters. The rest of the election participants were far behind.
The media note that such results indicate a “turn to the right” in Portugal, after eight years of the Socialists, led by the Prime Minister, being in power Antonio Kostoy.
Elections were called in November last year after the resignation of Prime Minister Costa. He became involved in a corruption investigation, after which early elections were called.
