One of the largest trials against suspected right-wing extremists in recent memory is underway in Jena. The martial arts group “Knockout 51” is said to have hunted leftists. Now a threatening video against the judge has appeared on the Internet.

In connection with the state security trial against a right-wing extremist martial arts group at the Higher Regional Court in Jena, a video emerged in right-wing extremist circles in which the presiding judge of the state security senate there is mocked and insulted. The court is now deliberating what consequences will be drawn from this.

The video was known to the Higher Regional Court, said a court spokeswoman upon request. “The facts are still being examined.” Even regardless of this video, the court is constantly trying to counteract possible threats or intimidation of judges. “The safety precautions in front of and in the building are continually checked and adjusted.”

Politically motivated crimes

Four suspected right-wing extremists from Thuringia are accused in the trial, which has been ongoing for around two weeks. The 21 to 25 year olds are accused, among other things, of having prepared serious and extremely serious crimes as members of a group called “Knockout 51”, particularly in the Eisenach area.

The video appeared on the Internet shortly after the end of the first day of negotiations in this case. It shows a still image in which several right-wing extremists pose behind an entrance sign that stands directly in front of the Jena Justice Center courthouse. The Higher Regional Court also has its headquarters in this building complex. In the music that accompanies the picture, the judge is insulted with foul language. The suspected right-wing extremists in the still image can be recognized; their faces are not pixelated or otherwise obscured.

Applause in the courtroom

On the first two days of the trial, several supporters of the defendants from different parts of Germany were present in the courtroom and loudly applauded the statements made by a lawyer for the main defendant.

According to the court spokeswoman, the people on the video should not be excluded from further participation in this trial as spectators. According to the spokeswoman, it is “fundamentally inadmissible to make a selection among the spectators who have appeared, as long as they meet the minimum requirements for appearance and safety.” “The reason for this is the great importance of the principle of publicity in court hearings, which may only be restricted in certain exceptional cases.” Reasons that would justify the exclusion of certain people from the main hearing “have not yet been identified.”

The “Knockout 51” trial is one of the largest cases against suspected right-wing extremists in Germany in recent times. According to the investigation, the defendants were members of the right-wing extremist martial arts group “Knockout 51” in Eisenach.

“From April 2021 at the latest, the ‘Knockout 51’ association was not only aimed at committing bodily harm but also at killing attackers from the left-wing extremist camp,” the representative of the Federal Prosecutor General said when reading out the indictment.
