The resignation of Melissa DeRosa, long an ardent defender of Andrew Cuomo, is a blow to New York’s Democratic governor who is the subject of a criminal investigation into sexual abuse.

As Cuomo’s secretary and right-hand man, DeRosa was considered his greatest defender and confidante for many years. Her role is also not untouched. In a statement on Twitter, she said the past two years have been “emotionally and mentally tough.” “I am eternally grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such talented and dedicated colleagues in the service of our state.”

Cuomo created a toxic atmosphere at work by sexually harassing current and former female New York State staff. He was violating both federal and his own state law, Attorney General James concluded.

The role of DeRosa is not without a doubt. She is said to have spearheaded a campaign to discredit Lindsey Boylan, the first woman to publicly accuse Cuomo of sexual harassment.

With DeRosa’s departure, the pressure is mounting on Cuomo, who has so far refused to resign, even after US President Joe Biden and just about every Democratic politician in New York urged him to do so.

Brittany Commisso also went public for the first time on Sunday. Commisso is one of eleven women who have accused Cuomo of transgressive behavior. In Attorney General Letitia James’s report, she was hitherto known as “executive assistant #1.”

In interviews with CBS News and Times Union magazine, Commisso explains that she filed a police report so that Cuomo would be held accountable for his actions. “What he did to me was a crime. He broke the law,” she emphasizes. The woman previously stated that Cuomo had touched her breasts during a meeting at his official residence. According to her, the governor is “displaying a pattern of predatory behavior.”
